Playing the brainy Elle Woods is local Filipino American actress Johnisa Breault in her first professional leading role

Like Elle Woods, the high-heeled heroine of “Legally Blonde,” Johnisa Breault once felt underestimated because of her appearance. “I am Filipino,” said the 22-year-old star of San Diego Musical Theatre’s production of the hit musical, which is based on the popular 2001 Reese Witherspoon film. “When I started to do theater, a lot of my friends said ‘You’ll be so successful because ethnic is in and that’s what people want to see.

'There was something so honest and truthful about Johnisa’s performance that made me unable to go in any other direction,” Bush recalled.

There's also a head-spinning number of high-flying and extremely athletic dance scenes — some with drums and veils, some with tap shoes, some with scimitars and some with dinner trays that hide pop-up surprises. In some ways, things move at such a dizzying pace in the two-hour, 30-minute show, the central love story gets a little lost, particularly in the action-packed second act.
