Ever since the disastrous release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Batman fans have been lamenting that in the last nine years Rocksteady just didn’t make another installment in their beloved Arkham series instead. Well now, Arkham lives on, but in a format many fans aren’t going to like.
Arkham Shadow has been announced, a new game in the series that is being made…exclusively for the Meta Quest 3. Yes, it’s VR.who says he will have more details about the game for Summer Game Fest on June 7. You can watch it below: It’s mostly just cinematic and we don’t know what exactly it will look like from a gameplay perspective yet. It features a symbol on a wall I’m still trying to decipher and a rat running around before we see Batman himself, looking a bit like he’s wearing his Origins suit, so that could indicate this is a prequel, which would make sense, as this would be an odd way to continue the final Arkham game.
While yes, VR games do have a dedicated fanbase, it is certainly much smaller than the larger gaming population dying for a “real” new Arkham game, especially in the wake of Suicide Squad’s looter shooter ambitions that featured Kevin Conroy’s Batman only in a villainous role.
This is not the first time we’ve seen Arkham go VR. Batman: Arkham VR was released in 2016 which received mixed reviews and was just a tiny sliver of the depth of the real Arkham games. No doubt Arkham Shadow’s scope will be similarly limited, even if big improvements have been made to the tech in eight years.
