AFL legend Nathan Buckley’s personal treasure trove of football memorabilia has netted almost $200,000 at auction on Wednesday. The former Collingwood captain and coach was forced to sell off the prized possessions as part of his divorce settlement, and there were a flurry of bids as football fans seized a rare opportunity. There was also a surprise buyer with 7NEWS able to confirm that the Collingwood Football Club purchased some of the items.
“When something like this comes along is like the holy grail,” he said. “I think every kid growing up, including myself, you lace up boots and want to be like Buckley.” 7NEWS understands that Collingwood snapped up a number of items to be put on display in the club’s museum, but enthusiastic supporters also joined in on the buying frenzy. Some fans took the day off work to be part of the action while others joined in online and over the phone.
