Attorney Bill McCaffrey said the lawsuit was being prepared after Smollett, 36, refused to reimburse Chicago $130,000 after Cook County prosecutors dropped the charges. But the actor, best known for his role as a gay musician on the Fox Television hip-hop drama “Empire,” was charged in February with staging the incident himself and filing a false police report.

Just proves to show that if you have money you can get 16 felony counts dropped, he is so super innocent anyway they need to find these guys who attacked him, why aren’t they focusing on that. The Chicago police completely dropped the ball.

this isn't how the justice system works. you can try to collect from people convicted of a crime, but you cannot try to collect from people who aren't even charged with a crime.
