Editorial: Brunei’s shocking new penal code must be challenged – through deeds as well as words. Britain’s responsibilities are clear

Brunei’s introduction of new laws allowing stoning for adultery and sex between men has sparked international outrage. Elton John and George Clooney’s calls for a boycott of luxury hotels owned by the tiny south-east Asian kingdom have grabbed the spotlight. The United Nations human rights chief Michelle Bachelet has condemned the “cruel and inhuman” measures, as have the EU, Australia and others.

Celebs are doing far more than our representative politicians who haven't said a peep on this human embarrassment. theresa_may Conservatives UKLabour LibDems greenparty TulipSiddiq speak up and act NOW.

People have been telling you that this is a problem for years and years, and all you've done is call them racists and bigots.

Burn his collection of cars.

The Guardian view on US and shooting and killing of Black people: don’t leave it to celebrities to act Any celebritie boycotting US? The Guardian view on Catholic church and sexual abuse of children: don’t leave it to celebrities to act Any celebritie boycotting churches?

So you are ok with an Islamic country being slated for barbaric so-called Sharia 'law', but you attack anyone in the UK that DARES to query the same thing here? Do you understand the term 'hypocrisy'?

The Guardian speaks out strongly Next thing you know they'll be criticising the Northern MPs who said LGBT issues shouldn't be discussed in British Muslim schools.

But aren’t all cultures equal at the Guardian? Wouldn’t interference from Britain be white supremacy or colonial oppression? Perhaps white saviours need to do the hard work of understanding alternative cultural perspectives etc...

You're absolutely right. Celebrities ability to act has seriously fallen these days.

Yes, we must speak out against Islam and the homophobic atrocities it inspires.

It’s ok to have a spiff ya

Clear threat to murder - No government cares. Harmless words - Armed agents turn up to kidnap.

Brunei is a sovereign nation! They have the right to legislate & implement their domestic policies! Colonialism is unsustainable! Iran Haiti Venezuela Libya Syria Afghanistan Pakistan India Iraq Egypt Turkey Bangladesh Kashmir Asia Kenya Africa Mali BurkinaFaso

How camp is the Sultan’s car? 😂😂

There are many other states which have severe penalties for homosexuality. Uganda, Tanzania and most Islamic countries.

It's a pleasure seeing privileged people use their celebrity wisely and for the public benefit. I agree tho it does leave politicians looking absent. Shocking silence from UK gov.

It's not actually Brunei's penal code you realise - but then you'd have to face some uncomfortable truths.

Listened to a really good interview with PeterTatchell about the disgusting practices in Brunei, also shocked to learn the Sultan was actually invited to Meghan Markle & Prince Harry's wedding, pretty hypocritical considering they claim to champion human rights!

Those saying 'Lets boycott' are cowards avoiding the issue. 'Lets boycott' a product or service does not address the real issue. You have a platform and this is your answer to abuse of people! Why is no one prepared to have the real conversation about ISLAM?

It's a mystery what ideology drives this.

But but Islam is a religion of peace and and cultural relativism is so woke

Can the muslims out there confirm whether this is allowed in islam? brunei

Has there been any condemnation from British Muslim organisations and in particular the British Muslim Council? Just asking..
