Now that superhero movies are floundering, Hollywood studios are flocking back to the toy chest

1985’s Clue has long been the gold standard for movies based on board games. While the toxic thinking that led to the subgenre has added a handful of worthy titles to the game closet, most probably think of Battleship, which sunk the genre back in 2012. Very few end up as good as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves or Ouija: Origin Of Evil, and while there is a board game version of Jumanji, those movies are based on a book. So that brings Hollywood back to square one with Clue.

Nothing has been announced yet, but few games translate to the screen like Clue. For one thing, there are distinct characters with names—not just a frickin’ thimble—and a plot: Find who killed Mr. Boddy. Clue fits neatly into a popular genre: the whodunit. One doesn’t need to stretch their imagination too far to picture a multipart streaming series that dives into the histories of each character and, perhaps, builds a motive and an alibi for them.
