The late Chadwick Murray, charismatic front-man for Bastards of Soul, is the subject of a documentary making its Texas premiere on April 27 as part of the Dallas International Film Festival., a new documentary about the Dallas band of the same name, pianist Chad Stockslager welcomes the crowd inside the Kessler as musicians line the stage in black suits and ties, looking a bit like Mormons if Mormons could seriously jam. He’s winding up the audience for the frontman’s arrival.
Murray was about to be a father. “It’s all happening at once,” he tells the camera. But a rare autoimmune disease landed him in the hospital soon after the sessions. It wasn’t COVID, but protocols meant visitors were restricted.“I’ve never seen a group of doctors and nurses so pissed off,” Murray’s friend and local music veteran Max Hartman says in the film. They couldn’t save him.
"Bastards of Soul" director, Paul Levatino, whose initial concept for a "short video" expanded after Murray's death.Levatino’s “short video” took on new significance after that as Wade urged him to develop a bigger project. “It felt daunting,” Levatino recently told me over the phone.
