, it appears the saga of Zack Snyder’s would-be Star Wars universe is at an end, even if he claims he wants to make six movies in total. R-rated cuts of the first two films are coming this summer, but after watching the first drafts, it’s going to be extremely tough to have the desire to sit through 4-6 more hours, no matter how much gore and nudity is added.
The script here is the problem. The main issue is the entire structure of the storyline, which is pulled from Seven Samurai so directly it’s not an homage, it’s a rip-off. The first film had galactic travel to assemble its core warriors, the second half stays entirely within the confines of a single moon and a single village of about eight buildings, and has a “train the villagers to fight” sequence that again, clones its source material.
There is a 40 minute stretch of time where there is some amount of decent action. I’ve been a fan of many of Snyder’s action sequences since 300, but here, the absurd editing out of any blood or gore for this utterly neutered PG-13 version makes so many of these scenes ridiculous as axes clang off armor and it somehow kills the soldier in question.
