Two projects shortlisted for the 2024 Australian Interior Design Awards show where Brisbane’s residential future is heading.

“The intention was to make this feel like an urban resort,” says Bates Smart interior design director Brenton Smith. “That really resonated with the subtropical nature of Brisbane.”

The glazed brick exterior, designed to mimic the angular facade of the nearby Kangaroo Point cliffs, complements the interior’s open floor plan, use of raw materials and tasteful styling.“It was very much about a less is more approach,” Smith says. “We intentionally use beautiful materials, but we use them sparingly.”“ provide a space that in 20-30 years time is still going to be beautiful because it’s not responding to a fashion or trend.

It’s not your typical family-of-five home and is obviously imbued with the elevated tastes of the clients, one of whom is an ex-stylish and art collector.
