After demolishing its existing theatre to create a new foyer, the institute has turned over its entire space to live performance for its next program.

When the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art had to demolish its theatre to create a new entrance and foyer, director and CEO Hannah Mathews was determined it wouldn't be the end of performance in the gallery.

It grapples with feeling both insignificant and overexposed in the modern world, and what it takes to do something worthwhile with life. "I think that is a really important experience of the time we're living in, that we're faced with these digital iterations of ourselves which we sometimes curate and that sometimes curate themselves and they kind of exist outside of us," she said.

"And the work's not about surrendering to that helplessness, I think it's acknowledging it, but also maybe it's about contributing to the world in a way that we won't see the result of," she said.Make Your Life Count will be followed in the new PICA space by WA-founded new music ensemble Decibel, which will lead audiences through the building while playing a reworking of the score to Twin Peaks.
