I am worried that Anthony Warlow, arguably Australia’s most famous musical theatre star, will be hungry tonight as he takes to the stage as slick lawyer Billy Flynn in. For one, it’s a little early for him, as he has to time his meals around curtain times – “If it’s a 7 o’clock show, I try to eat at about 3.30, 4 o’clock,” he says. “Though I’m not scientific about it.”
It was. He spoke with his local producer, who encouraged him to take up the New York gig, finding a replacement for the final three weeks in Brisbane.“I came back to Melbourne, packed for nearly two years of living in New York and went over, a deer in the headlights. I thought, ‘what have I done? Because I’m going to really have to come up to the mettle with this’.
And another secret: Anthony Warlow, stage star of decades with thousands of performances under his belt, hates opening nights. He finds the performers’ energy shifts and becomes tense, and overly enthusiastic audiences step all over dialogue. “It can be a distraction,” he says. “You want to say to them, ‘we’ve got a really good line here to deliver, just shush and listen to it’.”twice now, once on opening night and again a couple of weeks in.
“When Christine is around, he’s beautiful, balletic and everything, but it pains him immeasurably. And so in the final lair, when his guard is down, he is a monster. “Like,” Warlow hunches in his seat, demonstrating the Phantom’s posture, “... this is comfortable.”
