An American tourist visiting the former Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp tried to steal part of the historic train tracks where prisoners were unloaded, Polish officials said.

Although the crime can be punished with up to ten years in prison, the unnamed tourist will likely face less jail time because he has admitted to his crime, Jurecka said. ‘Since he has admitted his guilt, the sentence will be lighter, likely two years on probation,’ Jurecka toldThe man has been released from police custody and is allowed to leave the country. He will not be required to be in Poland when his case goes to court, although he will have to hire a legal representation, said the policewoman.

The tourist was reportedly part of a larger guided group visiting the memorial, when he was spotted trying to take the metal piece of train tracks by a woman in a tour group, who alerted security.More than one million people were killed at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the most prolific of Nazi Germany’s death camps.
