Prior to her sentencing, Gutierrez-Reed’s defense contended that their client was a “convenient scapegoat” in this shooting, and asked for her to be given probation. Her attorneys also cited her “complete lack of prior criminal history” and “relative youth.” A friend of Hutchins had testified in the trial, telling the court that the cinematographer was “a force” who inspired her. She asked for the court to impose the maximum sentencing on Gutierrez-Reed, as she “needs to be held accountable.”Joel Souza, also praised Hutchins for having “a talent for life.” Souza had been injured when the gun that killed Hutchins was fired.
