A man has been arrested after allegedly throwing a Pop-Tart at a Walgreens employee who confronted him for shoplifting, according to an affidavit filed by the Austin Police Department. On Monday, April 8, at approximately 9:14 p.m., an officer responded to a theft call at a south Austin Walgreens located at S. 1st St. and Stassney Ln. Upon arrival, the officer made contact with the complainant, who stated that an individual had taken property from the store without paying for it.
They told police he had followed the man just beyond the store's entrance and started filming him, believing it was the same person who had been shoplifting multiple times that week. During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly hurled a Pop-Tart at the man, striking him in the left upper chest/clavicle area and causing pain, court documents said.
The suspect then reportedly made a furtive movement, reaching for what the victim believed could be a firearm or knife. Fearing for his life, the man retreated inside the store to call 911. The suspect maintained control of the stolen property, worth $58.62, and fled the scene on a bike. The officer located the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Jonathan Agassi Steele, a short distance from the store.
