Greater Manchester Police is investigating whether Rayner violated electoral law by providing inaccurate information about her living situation a decade ago. Rayner maintains that she followed the rules when declaring her main residence and selling her ex-council house in Stockport.

Angela Rayner 'will focus on facts rather than gossip' in the ongoing row over her living arrangements, shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said.

"We understand this is the run-up to local elections, we have seen this before as we saw with the Durham case as well. This is obviously about her family arrangements, her personal finances, and that's really how it should be dealt with instead." “I have always said that integrity and accountability are important in politics. That’s why it’s important that this is urgently looked at, independently and without political interference.

“The questions raised relate to a time before I was an MP and I have set out my family’s circumstances and taken expert tax and legal advice. I look forward to setting out the facts with the relevant authorities at the earliest opportunity.”
