Tanya Preston feels the weight of losing her son, Alex, every day. Forever eight years old, her eldest son died from a rare and aggressive brain cancer in 2009. “We still celebrate his birthday and he’s part of Christmas,” Preston told 7NEWS.com.au. “As a parent, when you lose a child you never, ever want to forget or have them be forgotten.” It was this drive to keep Alex’s legacy alive that motivated her as she cycled 1000km across Victoria last week.
Doctors initial thought he had glandular fever before conducting an MRI which found Alex had a rare and aggressive brain cancer, medulloblastoma. From there it was a “whirlwind”. Alex was flown from Metung to Melbourne, where he underwent testing and surgery to have the tumour removed. Preston uprooted her life to the city, renting an apartment near the hospital while David stayed in Metung with their two other children and visited on weekends.
