Charlie Smyth from Mayobridge recently signed a contract to join the New Orleans Saints

Co Down GAA goalkeeper and newly signed NFL kicker Charlie Smyth joined Patrick Kielty tonight on the RTE Late Late Show where he spoke of his excitement for his big career change.

The first guest on the night was 22-year-old Mayobridge and Co Down goalkeeper Charlie Smyth who recently signed with the New Orleans Saints to become a kicker in the NFL, the first Irish born person to do so.Patrick Kielty was also a goalkeeper, winning an All-Ireland Minor medal with Co Down in his younger days.

The qualified teacher said that he first started training with an American Football in August last year, but had to take a break for a month after this due to his local club championship Charlie told Patrick that it had been a "life changing experience" as he had been planning on starting a career as a teacher but life has taken a different turn.
