The following contains spoilers for Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and the Wicked musical

The upcoming musical adaptation of Wicked seems to be directly taking cues largely from the musical, but there are some elements of the original story that might bleed through to the new movies. One of the most interesting would be the approach taken to Elphaba's love story, which ended on a particularly tragic note in the original book but went through changes for the musical.

In Gregory Maguire's Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, Fiyero actually has a family when he and Elphaba begin an affair that eventually produces a son, Liir. After being arrested by the Wizard's secret police, Fiyero is executed — a fate eventually shared by most of his family. It was a harrowing showcase of the Wizard's true villainous edge and helped push Elphaba to her furious state at the end of the story.
