Beyonce made major tweaks to the lyrics of Dolly Parton's hit 1973 song, Jolene, as she covered the track on her Cowboy Carter album - which officially dropped on Thursday.
While Parton's lyrics had been: 'Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene/I'm begging of you please don't take my man/Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene/Please don't take him just because you can.' In Beyonce's version, she instead sang: 'You're beautiful beyond compare/Takes more than beauty and seductive stares/To come between a family and a happy man.'
'Good deeds roll in like tumbling weeds/I sleep good happy, cause you can't dig up our planted seeds/I know my man's gon' stand by me breathing in my gentle breeze.' Earlier this month, Dolly hinted that the singer may have covered Jolene and gave her thoughts during an interview with Knox News. Back in 2022, Parton had expressed her wish for Beyonce to cover her track Jolene. While on The Daily Show With Trevor Noah, she stated, 'I think she's fantastic and beautiful, and I love her music.'
Earlier this month, Dolly hinted that the singer may have covered Jolene and gave her thoughts during an interview with Knox News; seen in 2022 in Las Vegas One wrote, 'This is why Dolly Parton wanted her to sing it,' while another brought up the lyric changes. 'You know that hussy with the good hair you sing about? Reminded me of someone I knew back when. Except she has flaming locks of auburn hair,' she added, subtly referencing to Beyonce's 'Becky' from her Lemonade album era.Not long after Country Carter became available, social media users flocked to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their excitement over the album - as well as the Jolene cover.
She worked alongside another legend, Willie Nelson, on Smoke Hour and Smoke Hour II, while Post Malone was featured on Levii's Jeans. Her daughter, Rumi, also appeared on the song Protector. Along with showing cover art, she expressed gratitude for the success of her previously released singles 16 Carriages and Texas Hold 'Em which dropped in February.
