Real Power, recorded with superstar producer Rick Rubin, is the work of musicians comfortable in their skins Sometimes, a hit single is a band’s passport to the A-list – but occasionally, it is a millstone around their necks. With 2006’s “Standing in the Way of Control”, indie disco power-trio Gossip released one of the decade’s classic tracks. Here was an irrepressible belter arguably ranking second only to The White Stripes’s “Seven Nation Army” as a defining moment of noughties indie.
The downside of that success is that its shadow has followed the group ever since. Eighteen years later, however, and a full 12 since their last studio album,and her bandmates appear to have made peace with the song and its evergreen popularity. On their brisk and upbeat, they do not dance around “Standing in the Way of Control” . Instead, Gossip – reuniting after a lengthy hiatus – bear-hug their legacy at every opportunity.
