BelfastLive readers react as figures show Northern Irish people defy assisted dying laws

A report from an assisted dying campaign group shows that hundreds of people have defied laws in their own countries to visit Dignitas, including three from Northern Ireland since 2002 - and BelfastLive readers have been showing their support for the practice in our comments section. Dignitas is the most well-known organisation that provides the service, and it is legal to do in Switzerland.

Hondavfr57 says: “I think here in the UK, we should have assisted death. But with stringent safeguards. My father died painfully from cancer!! Terrible to see!!!”. Ronn55 also has a personal stake in it: “It is a contentious issue but having nursed a loved one for 8 months with terminal cancer as she screamed in agony and begged to die, it is not compassionate or supportive. It is a disgrace... there are medical conditions where even large doses of morphine do not take away the agony.
