The Coast Salish piece, known as Spindle Whorl, had been a downtown fixture in the Vancouver Island city since 2013

The Nanaimo RCMP are asking for the public help in finding a “significant piece of First Nations art” stolen from the city last week.The one-metre wide cedar disc, carved by Snuneymuxw artist Joel Good, was stolen on the weekend from its public display near the intersection of Albert Street and Victoria Crescent. It had been secured to its base with four screws.

“Historically, the spindle whorl has become an iconic symbol for the Snuneymuwx people with carvings that often depict family stories and legends,” Nanaimo RCMP said in a release. Anyone with information can contact the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 and quote file # 2019-9878. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
