President Vladimir Putin has said that he was informed of an idea to release his fiercest political foe, Alexei Navalny, from prison, days before the opposition leader's death.Responding to a question from a journalist from Sky News' US partner network, NBC, during his victory speech in Moscow, the president said he had agreed to the idea, but only on condition that Mr Navalny did not return to Russia.
He added that it was 'sad' that someone had died.Mr Navalny, who campaigned against official corruption and led major anti-Kremlin protests, died in an Arctic prison last month, at the age of 47. His ally, Maria Pevchikh, previously claimed that Mr Navalny was set to be freed as part of a prisoner swap, adding that she received confirmation about the talks the day before his death.
