Melbourne-based Werner Film Productions, also behind Netflix show Surviving Summer, has become BBC Studios’ second acquisition outside the United Kingdom.

The commercial arm of the British public broadcaster, BBC Studios, has bought the Australian film and television production studio behind the ABC hit serieshas become BBC Studios’ second acquisition outside the United Kingdom, reflecting the BBC’s ambition to increase its footprint across the world, says its Australian head, Kylie Washington.BBC Studios already owns or invests in 14 studios.

Australian content has all the ingredients to travel around the world, Washington says – English language, high production values, significant investment, and a worldwide appetite for more diverse storytelling. are standouts, particularly in the UK, says Joanna Werner, director of Werner, who alongside managing director Stuart Menzies will continue in their roles.

BBC Studios leads the BBC’s studio and streaming business, producing, investing and distributing content around the world.
