"I'm allergic to dogs, and I have four of them," Wahlberg toldDespite his allergies, he stars alongside Ukai, an Australian shepherd-Border collie-Bouvier mix, in the film that arrives in theaters on Friday. The movie is based on the true story of adventure racer Mikael Lindnord, who met a stray dog in Ecuador that became his racing companion."You got to accept the fact that the dog's going to show you up a little bit," Wahlberg says of working with animals on screen.
His penchant for finding himself around dogs despite an allergy may have a bit to do with having four kids at home, all of whom fell in love with Ukai, he told PEOPLE. However, he's not in charge of the pups at home. That responsibility falls elsewhere. "The one who is in most control and actually can handle them all the time and they listen to is my daughter Grace," he says. "She's good with animals.
