The Bo'ness Hippodrome, the oldest cinema in Scotland, celebrates its 112th birthday on March 11 — and is still wowing audiences with its unique interior and diverse film programme. Designed in 1912 by architect Matthew Steele and filmmaker Louis Dickson, the cinema could fit more than 1,000 people and showed both big-budget movies and smaller ones made by Dickson himself. After closing its doors in 1960, the Bo'ness Hippodrome briefly opened again in 1975 as a bingo hall.
However, it was shut down in the 1980s. Thanks to grants, including the National Lottery, the cinema was fixed up and reopened in 2009. Today, it serves as a cultural hub in the town, hosting special movie nights and a festival for silent films
