The start to San Diego State’s first spring practice was all too familiar. The specialists — long snappers, punters and place-kickers — entered the field Tuesday afternoon well ahead of their teammates. They booted balls and bantered. When one of them hooked a 45-yard field goal attempt wide left, another said, “Jussssst a bit outside.” Soon enough, their Aztecs teammates joined them on the field.
Missing was sophomore walk-on Tobin O’Dell, who was the backup last season to starting quarterback Jalen Mayden. O’Dell has decided to transfer, though he has not yet determined a destination.. “Wanted to try and play somewhere and just take a break,” O'Dell told the Union-Tribune in a text message. O’Dell’s departure leaves more reps for the others, who will not necessarily continue to get their opportunity in the same order.
