Simon Cowell is a man rarely lost for words. But as the host of the recent Together For Short Lives Ball, he struggled to speak when faced with a mother’s heartbreaking account of losing her beloved son. The moving moment came during the OK !-sponsored event for the charity, which provides vital support for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families.
Simon, who is 64, admits that even before his little boy arrived in the world, he found the work of Together For Short Lives incredibly inspiring. Now, as a father himself, the testimonies of those helped by the charity affect him all the more. “Even before I had Eric, I knew the work done was incredible,” he reveals. “I remember going to a hospice for the first time and I was very nervous. In my mind, I had imagined somewhere that was very grey and very sad – yet it was the exact opposite.
Does he hope to pass that philanthropic spirit on to Eric? “One hundred percent. He knows what I do, why I do it and we talk about it; we discussed the ball and what it’s all for. He is a little young at the moment, but I would hope he would continue with what we’re doing.” He pauses to reflect. “Life before Eric and life now is totally different. When I got the call I was going to be a father I thought I was too old at 53, but it’s amazing. I see life through a different lens. Plus, I get to watch all those great Disney movies all over again.”
“As we drove home last night we both said the same thing – that it was a great leveller and we are very lucky to have a healthy little boy.” His other great love, of course, is The X Factor which has been rumoured to be slated for comeback for some time.
