Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Thing had a secret role in World War Hulk, and it makes his rivalry with the Jade Giant even darker. In the late 2000s, Marvel’s Illuminati exiled the Hulk into space, setting the stage for the epic Planet Hulk/World War Hulk events. It was a defining story for the Hulk, and as revealed in 2006’s Fantastic Four #535, Ben Grimm had a secret role in bringing it about.
In Fantastic Four #535, written by J. Michael Straczynski and drawn by Mike McKone, the Thing and the Human Torch are discussing their latest fight with the Hulk. During the fight, the two threw everything that they had at the Hulk, only for him to remain standing. The Thing realized nothing could ever kill the Hulk, so he made an off-handed joke to Mister Fantastic about launching the Hulk into space.
However, the Thing was correct in his assessment: the Hulk cannot be killed. Nearly everyone in the Marvel Universe, ranging from heroes to gods alike, has tried to stop the Hulk to no avail, often resulting in significant destruction and death. Planet Hulk and World War Hulk addressed this issue by having the Illuminati shoot Banner into space, to a remote paradise planet where he could live out the rest of his life in peace and away from the rest of the galaxy.
The Thing Took Everything From the Hulk The Thing Deprived Hulk of His True Love The revelation regarding the Thing’s involvement in the buildup to World War Hulk darkens their rivalry. Although intended to be a punishment, it ironically almost became the best thing to happen to the Hulk. While in exile, he met the love of his life, only to watch her die a senseless death due to the Illuminati.
