A penguin was allegedly attacked by three young men in the middle of tram tracks in a popular beachside suburb in Melbourne, with authorities asking for help to track down the offenders. A member of the public reported seeing three men allegedly kicking the little penguin at tram stop number 136 at Alfred Square/The Esplanade in St Kilda about 11.30pm on December 8, 2023.
The witness managed to stop the group and relocate the penguin to the beach near St Kilda Pier, according to Crime Stoppers. They reported the incident to local authorities who then alerted the Conservation Regulator. Authorities have now released CCTV footage of three men they believe may be able to help with the investigation into the incident. It is illegal to injure, disturb, chase, or interfere with wildlife in Victoria. Maximum penalties range from $3846 to $48,077 or 12 months in jail.
