Alana’s mum Tura was menopausal. At least, that’s what she’d been told by a GP. In reality, a tumour the size of a rockmelon was lurking in her uterus. Tura was just 50 when she was diagnosed with uterine cancer, a cancer which - when caught early - has a high survival rate. But Alana says by the time her mum’s disease was found, it was too late. Despite having been told that her ongoing pain was just part of getting older, Tura died just shy of her 54th birthday.
“They weren’t athletes, not superhuman - they just looked like normal people. “I saw their singlets and they read ‘Can Too: Run, swim and cure cancer.” For the next 5km Alana, unbeknown to the women, jogged beside them. “They pulled me across the finish line and they have no idea,” she says. “They inspired me.” Alana received her medal for completing the half marathon and her mum beamed from ear to ear in awe of her incredible daughter.
