Despite the test of the historical epic genre, two Ridley Scott movies prove the upcoming Napoleon film will overcome the challenge to be a big deal.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The upcoming Napoleon movie is certainly in good hands thanks to director Ridley Scott, and two of his movies, in particular, stand out as reasons why. The film about French leader Napoleon Bonaparte's rise to power, starring Joaquin Phoenix, is among the most anticipated movies remaining in 2023.

The distinguished filmmaker has an incredibly rich filmography spanning decades and all genres. While he might be most well-known for his bold and successful sci-fi movies, Ridley Scott has always been fascinated with history and true stories. His last three movies - All the Money in the World, The Last Duel, and House of Gucci - are all based on historical events and people.

The multi-award-winning movie Gladiator is a cultural phenomenon that cemented a legacy as one of the greatest historical epics, action films, and the greatest films of the 2000s. Kingdom of Heaven doesn't enjoy the same legacy and trails Gladiator's "Certified Fresh" score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, but Kingdom of Heaven reaped its own honors. With a 40% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, Kingdom of Heaven seems like a misfire.

Why Napoleon Is Still A Big Test For Ridley Scott While Scott has had good practice developing Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven, the historical epic genre will still pose significant challenges for him with Napoleon. While all three of these movies are in some way based on real life and true historical events, Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven are more fictionalized in their approach.

Even before the movie's release, Ridley Scott replied to Napoleon's historical accuracy criticisms. He does not seem fazed by criticisms of how closely to the true story his film is, offering the blunt retort to The New Yorker, "Get a life." That might be his general approach to the movie and these specific criticisms, but that does not negate the chances that the film could receive worse reviews or underperform because of its changes.
