Women have covered their heads to show support for New Zealand's Muslims a week after 50 people were killed at two Christchurch mosques, but some say the gesture is cheap tokenism.

"Why am I wearing a headscarf today? Well, my primary reason was that if anybody else turns up waving a gun, I want to stand between him and anybody he might be pointing it at," Bell Sibly said in Christchurch. Many Muslim women cover their heads in public, although some critics see it as a sign of female oppression.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern won widespread praise last week for putting on a black headscarf when meeting members of the Muslim community after the shootings. And on Thursday, a female police officer with a scarf over her head and an automatic weapon in her hands kept guard at a Christchurch cemetery where shooting victims were buried.Rachel MacGregor, who is involved in the Head Scarf for Harmony campaign, said she had felt anxious going out with her head covered, with people staring at her when she entered her office building.

"It's given me for the first time an appreciation for what it must be like to be a minority and to wear clothing that perhaps the majority don't normally wear," she said.

So - women wear the symbol and actual instrument of Muslim women's oppression. How terribly misguided.

I hope other religions receive the same outpour of love and sympathy that these victims are receiving. We need to treat all religions equally. I’ve never seen anything like this before, and I hope the people of NZ and Aus do this for all religions.

Yeah. No. Not necessary. The concept of inclusion is for you, me, we, to be ourselves without judgment or revision of the staus quo. Changing, altering oneself is an interpretation of reality to appease, but then you are no longer yourself, so it cannot be inclusive.

Hijab represents female oppression NOT solidarity with Muslims.

Showing solidarity by wearing a symbol of women's oppression.... Yeah makes sense.... I'm sure the women forced by Islamic law to cover up under threat of punishment appreciate it.

Absolutely great community spirit to show support for women in grief but not to passively support the subjugation of women. Hijab is not a choice. Poor form using oppressive cultural headwear that get women arrested, beaten or worse for not wearing NoHijabDay equality harmony

Give em an inch they'll take a mile. Youve been warned.

That's right, champion female oppression.

Generous compassion shown by the kiwis in the aftermath of christchushootings has been so remarkable, guided by a truly smart and great leader Jacinda_Ardern. Great respect to New Zealanders!

What happened to all the efforts from the other side in any of the many many similar attacks, did we all miss something

Don't understand feminism's hypocritical silence over Islam? Reason feminism tolerates Islam is they share a common belief and goal: - Pathological hatred of Judaeo-Christian West - West's destruction The headscarf is merely a tolerated symbol of hate

A symbol of the Islamic patriarchy, bravo!

An absolute disgrace they have shown their support for the subjugation of women. What next?

For goodness sake. This is not solidarity; this is just feel-good empty symbolism.

Most muslim women in the world are required to wear something like that. In Iran threats of imprisonment and even death could follow from non-compliance. ConfessionsExMu

Reckon those women in Christchurch give not one flying fuck about the fashion police narks on twitter.

Iranian women remove headscarves in grieving for their murdered sisters.

I find it a weird way to express solidarity, maybe just wearing black clothes would be enough.

Each of you will get so many likes on social media for your cultural awesomeness

Is it impossible to show genuine grief, compassion & solidarity w/out appropriating a cultural symbol that many find oppressive?

news_australian Why

this is stupidity and submission and is pushed by islamist groups

I don't see any differences of wearing scarves and footbinding. They are the symboles of oppression of women.

NZ women submit to Islam.

NZ women mutilate their daughters genitals then when they at 10 marry them off

Nothing like showing oppression to get your point across.

That’s just stupid.

news_australian

Do New Zealand men wear headscarves too?

Very foolish

This has gone too far. Bet is driven by women.
