As New South Wales voters count down the hours until polling day, the state’s peak union body is orchestrating a last-minute campaign to encourage the electorate to think about the future of live music. 2600SkyNews

As New South Wales voters count down the hours until polling day, the state’s peak union body is orchestrating a last-minute campaign to encourage the electorate to think about the future of live music.

Unions NSW argues Premier Gladys Berejiklian has waged a “war on festivals,” with promoters bearing the brunt of a “massive increase in costs…that many simply cannot afford.” Music festival organisers say they were left in a state of bewilderment last month after the state government introduced strict new licensing rules following a spate of drug-related deaths at live events.

“I want to see our live music industry flourish, I want to see more festivals in the future…but I also want to make sure that when people attend these festivals the risk of brain injury, lifelong injury, or death is low.”“These new regulations are not only decimating music culture in NSW but also putting many workers out of jobs.”A music industry coalition including Live Performance Australia, Music NSW and APRA AMCOS has campaigned against the government’s initiatives.

Music festival organiser says new regulations are 'an invasion of civil liberties'Music festival operators have criticised strict new licencing in NSW, saying it stifles the music industry and that festival-goers should be free to take their own risks. Yes people do have a right to kill themselves, just like they can drink themselves to death deliberately. But not by using illegal drugs. On a related note we had a big festival up the road at Willowbank the other day and not a single person died. Why is that? So now it is an invasion of civil liberties to be prevented from breaking the law.
