City councillors of various political persuasions are urging council staff to review their decision to refuse a mural of retired Sydney Swans legend Lance “Buddy” Franklin, as a debate opens up about whether Sydney has too many murals of male sports stars.
Staff said the mural amounted to advertising, which is prohibited under state laws in the Bourke Street South heritage conservation area. The mural would detract from character of the area and “add to visual clutter”, they concluded. Liberal councillor Lyndon Gannon said it was “perplexing” to claim the artwork would detract from the heritage value of the area, “when the building currently looks like a derelict Soviet shack, next to a barely used pop-up bike lane”.Credit:Labor’s Linda Scott said Sydney loved the Swans and the decision was disappointing. “I’m for more public art, not less, and the City should work harder to create more,” she said.
Another nearby mural of former Swans captain Josh Kennedy was “approved on the condition that amendments were made to reduce the branding”, they said. “Let’s not pretend this is art,” they wrote. “It is hyper-realist commercial kitsch that relies on size for impact, it’s visual pollution wrapped up in a smoke screen of social benefits.” They went on to say: “These King Kong murals dominate the domestic scale of the surrounding streets.”Apparition and the Swans painted the mural of another Indigenous ex-Swans player, Adam Goodes, nearby.
