Representatives from United Nations, Suhakam, Pusat Komas and others with Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah at the launch of the Malaysia Racial Discrimination Report 2018.
“Furthermore, numerous efforts have been taken by ordinary Malaysians to promote national unity and social cohesion in the nation,” said the 50-page Malaysia Racial Discrimination Report 2018 by Pusat Komas, released today in conjunction with International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
“As the 14th general election was around the corner, numerous politicians from all sides resorted to the use of racial politics to win the political support of the people,” it said. It also appended a “special report” on sports in Malaysia and how racial considerations come into play, resulting in a lack of racial diversity in certain sports.
“In SK Jalan Kebun Baharu, Teluk Panglima Garang, Selangor, 80% of their football players are Malays, while 20% are Indians. Eighty percent of their rugby, handball and netball players are Malays as is 100% of their dodgeball and takraw team. Meanwhile, 90% of their ping pong and basketball players are Chinese.”
At least three organisations are also mentioned for several racially charged statements: Malay right-wing group Perkasa, consumer pressure group Malaysian Islamic Consumers Association and Muslim NGO Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia.
