Opinion: Is it possible to separate art from unethical artists? Students across America respond

Editor’s note: This Future View is about art we love from unethical artists. Next week’s question will concern reparations for slavery. Sen.

Elizabeth Warren says it’s “time to start the national, full-blown conversation” but other Democratic presidential candidates prefer to dodge the question. Let’s ask it anyway: “Should America pay reparations for slavery to its African-American citizens?” Students should click here to submit opinions of fewer than 250 words before March 26. The best responses will be published that night.

I do still love the art but won't spend my money on artists with despicable behavior.

Good question, ask Bill Cosby.

I’m just spit ballin’ here but I tend to draw the line regarding “art appreciation” when a grown man is having sex with children.

I'm for the art

Why can't mainstream media just die?

If an artist care about audience,he is not a true artist.

No, we don’t reward child rapists!!!!!

Accusations don't warrant guilt until then stop reporting on it as fact

We can. We don’t need media attempting to make us think or feel otherwise.

Oh I do I still love all of Michael Jackson’s music as for R Kelly the only song I know is I believe I can fly, so I will still listen to that.

New world propaganda that create lies and hate

Michael Jackson was probably the one of few, if not the only, artists in America who is ethical. And you use his picture for this title? What a shame! You assume he’s guilty, even though his name was cleared by the court. After his death, media still wants to tarnish his name!!!

Isn't it the by-product of the morale of an artist is his work? The weirdier the art, the more it is appreciated. If we are to base appreciation of art to the morale of an artist, so much arts will go into waste.

michaeljackson is the greatest artist of all time! TheKingOfPop

Coming next from Opinion: 'Why can’t people both appreciate the art and acknowledge the moral failings of John Wayne Gacy?”

Moral failings is an understatement. Child rapist is a more accurate description.

Michael Jackson is the role model for aspiring Lefty child abusers. Michael got away with it publicly.

Nope.......

No, not when listening funds the exploitation and abuse of minors. No music or art is worth that.

Because children having their anuses violated is horrific beyond measure. THAT'S why, you apologists for pedophiles. Shame on you.

Fuxking children is MORE than a MORAL failing.

Michael Jackson‘s music will be loved and heard forever. His hypocritical critics, however, will just be footnotes..

I think we can appreciate their music and art. It will be hard to accept their personal actions and accusations.

Yes, there is no shame in being a pervert if liberal.

NO- --there was an artist who was a Nazi whose art we will never 'appreciate' ! evil is evil.........remember that--

What drivel.....

Because we’re hypocrites who created the situation that empowered MJ to behave the way he did and once exposed we wash our hands of it all.

We live fragmented and judgemental lives and expect more from others than we do of ourselves. Life can be a constant contradiction.

R. Kelly and Michael Jackson failures were open secrets for the last 30 years. I dont get the need to even have these documentaries bringing the crap up again

well, we used to do that until the ahistorical Puritans of the modern left came along...

If we start judging art by the moral failings of its creators...well, there's going to be a lot less art to enjoy (and a lot of pieces at the Louvre might need to be taken down).

Like Lee Harvey Oswald?

Donate all future $ to his victims. Sweet Justice. He’s dead so I have no issue with his music. Too late to virtue signal about him. Brilliant music artists. Deserved electric chair for harming kids! Along w/ all who knew and looked the other way! Shame

Pedophilia isn't just any moral failing, it is the crime society has deemed most vile.

That’s a good question. I feel that way about Woody Allen.

I say boycott R Kelly but not MJ. MJ is dead and all you are doing is taking money from his kids who are also victims of all of this because they have to know who their dad is. R Kelly on the other hand is still directly benefiting and he should continue to be supported.

Some of the worst people in the world are in Hollywood & professional sports. Despite their 'moral failings' we watch their movies & attend their ball games.

And if Hitler had been a great artist, would we visit the museum where his work was?

Pedophilia is more than a moral failing.

You mean like how people still read WSJ after Murdoch--the person most responsible for spewing hate in this country-- bought it?

Hmmmm....founding fathers evils....confedrate worship....Catholic Church....need the same questions....and not fan of the artists in question...just addressing hypocrisy

Ask some of his victims....

It's a little more than a moral failing.

Because our society is iconoclastic at heart. We like destroying icons.

One could argue that the Nazi Waffen SS uniforms were some of the best looking in military history. should we appreciate them?

The answer is because predators who are also commercial successes are making money at the expense of the people they victimize. You might even say the victims were lured by that success. That’s why.

Can someone do some journalism and stop the cutting and pasting journalism. Look into the accuser's just to amuse the public. Play like you are doing some research.

Because it was fuelled by the sexual exploitation of vulnerable minors.

Its easy to say anything when the person is not around to defend himself. It’s no concern to me and many other who can see the evident flaws on our society. MJ is still a Legend and legends are not without flaws.

Now days we appreciate Beethoven or Dickens with virtually no knowledge of their private lives (& drastic failings). Their art is independent of 'them', so to speak. Michael J.'s & R. Kelly's art is inseparably blended w their personal performance. They sort of 'are' their art.

I find any WSJ attempt to ask this question without any previous attempts to INVESTIGATE both sides of the matter, following the evidence, is hollow and hypocritical. True journalism in the United States is on life support.

I couldn’t listen to them to begin with.

Weinstein will adorn a lamp post for his serial sexual assaults

Because PYT sounds creepy AF now... that’s why.

I don't see a problem with seeing both a person's achievements and the person's flaws. We're all a mix of good and imperfect. 🙂

Moral failings are affairs, overdrinking, drug use. Not serial pedophilia. Use your head.

I don’t Know R Kelly. As to Michael Jackson, I think his music stands on it own. Maybe partially because of Quincy Jones. Look. So many artists I listen to have interesting pasts. Coltrane , Parker. Hendrix. You can name many. Ride the music.

Awesome question and concept. I have tried to discuss this with friends: 'I know he did ___, but I still like his Art.' Is a line many people cannot comprehend. They cannot disambiguate emotions and thoughts, often. Dr. Kavorkian was quite an interesting painter, for ex. art

Perhaps, it is bc these are celebs and not artists. Most of this music is cheaply produced shit. Anybody can learn to do that. There functions as celebs are different and complex.

Because ‘appreciating’ the art is usually tied to compensating the artist (or his trust).

Art is an expression of the self. Songs are art. That's why.

Because appreciating their art puts money into the pockets of, and supports, these moral failures.

Like Confederate statues?

The same people who justify de-platforming and silencing people they don't agree with (see: Alex Jones, Milo Yiannopoulos) are telling us to enjoy the careers of known pedophiles and child predators now?

KeyaMorgan

I LOVE HIM FOREVER... I HATE LIARS LIKE FAKE MEDIA...

Well since Michael is innocent I can listen to his grooves just fine

Zigmanfreud LOOK THIS!!!!!! ONLY STUPIDS PEOPLE...

Idk but for some reason millions of people had no problem listening to this song from a convicted child sex offender rapist who had child porn

Just try and listen to “PYT- Pretty Young Thing” without puking.

i can and do. . i will always continue to listen to Michael Jackson. . understanding his background and you will see how pll can go astray being surrounded by 'yes people'....look no further than Catholic Priests.

You can start with Picasso.

We have to understand that individuals are never just one thing

We will never know the truth. The same rage is needed like with Weinstein I think. No matter if male or female alleges abuse need to be investigated.

Because supporting and idolizing them enables them to continue abusing people via social influence and money

michaelJackson pissed a lot of people off because he was not only the most famous and successful musical artist of all time, but also the first black artist to own music by white artists. People who think theres no racism in the music industry, are absolutely delusional.

The media....

The media....

THE MEDIA IS MORAL

Nope, but I believed the accusers the first time so quit being a fan then.

I've never heard anything by R. Kelly, Jackson, Madonna, or any of that low life trash. Merci vous.

These are serial criminals we’re talking about, not morally flawed individuals

Exactly right. MJ fans (I am one) must accept he was a pedophile. Doesn't change his music.

Artists realize that we are our art, our art is us. It's impossible to separate my art from me, from the mind that created it, from the being that needed to make art.
