A decision to play iconic Wiggles song ‘Hot Potato’ on repeat to drive homeless people away from a waterfront stage in a Western Australian city has “deeply disappointed” the children’s music group.

The City of Bunbury, 200 kilometres south of Perth, had been repeatedly playing music they believed would irritate homeless people in the area of the Graham Bricknell Music Shell and force them to move elsewhere.

The song had reportedly been switched off as of late Thursday afternoon after Bunbury mayor Jaysen Miguel said music had been locked at full volume following tampering and break-ins at the music shell. In 2016 the council opted for the same tactic to keep homeless people and vandals away from the music shell, playing Peter Allen’s hit ‘I Go to Rio’ in the year of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

“I am very disappointed that the music is being played and very disappointed that the issue hasn’t come up earlier so that we can take the appropriate action to try and address it. But playing music 24 hours a day is not a solution to homelessness.”
