Horror works particularly well when it’s tied to the searching and powerless perspective of a child. Thus, it’s a rewarding experience to see children so thoughtfully and compellingly rendered in Flanagan’s adaptations, as well as in his original works like Before I Wake, Oculus, and Ouija: Origin of Evil. It’s a shame that Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and The Fall of The House of Usher don’t prominently feature children.

Thankfully, Mike Flanagan’s penchant for reusing actors extends to child actors as well; the filmmaker will reenlist some of the young actors who have turned in great performances in earlier Flanagan projects.
