A child has been injured in a hit-and-run crash in Melbourne’s east. The driver and nine-year-old were in a BMW X5 SUV driving on Auburn Rd in Hawthorn just after 7am on Wednesday. A man driving a Volkswagen Oroton then allegedly collided with the BMW, with the impact forcing it to flip onto its side.

The child and the driver, whose age is not yet known, both suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital. The Volkswagen driver, a 41-year-old from Noble Park, allegedly ran from the area after the crash. Police found him a short time later on Auburn Rd and he was arrested. He is assisting police with their inquiries. Anyone with information on the crash is urged to contact police.
