But Channel 4’s newest entry into the “put celebs through hell” genre of television,Taking place in the now-decommissioned HMP Shrewsbury, the four-part series sends a handful of “celebrities” down to serve eight days in the most realistic prison simulation possible to expose them –and by extension us at home – to the shocking realities of what it’s really like to be imprisoned.
Taking on a fly-on-the-wall documentary style of filming was a smart decision by producers as it gave the episode a grittier, more realistic feel. To create a more genuine experience, the celebrities were joined inMercer’s cellmate, former contract killer Kevin Lane, deserved an Oscar for his performance: equally terrifying and charming, he produced excrement-covered contraband cigarettes from his you-know-where and smoked them. I’m grateful this was broadcast after teatime.
