Channel 4's new reality show sends celebrities to serve eight days in a realistic prison simulation to expose them and viewers to the realities of incarceration.

You know, because of the bugs and the eating of the fisheyes. But Channel 4’s newest entry into the “put celebs through hell” genre of television,Taking place in the now-decommissioned HMP Shrewsbury, the four-part series sends a handful of “celebrities” down to serve eight days in the most realistic prison simulation possible to expose them –and by extension us at home – to the shocking realities of what it’s really like to be imprisoned.

Taking on a fly-on-the-wall documentary style of filming was a smart decision by producers as it gave the episode a grittier, more realistic feel. To create a more genuine experience, the celebrities were joined inMercer’s cellmate, former contract killer Kevin Lane, deserved an Oscar for his performance: equally terrifying and charming, he produced excrement-covered contraband cigarettes from his you-know-where and smoked them. I’m grateful this was broadcast after teatime.
