The first reviews come pouring in for Blumhouse's upcoming movie adaptation of the modern classic horror video game Five Nights at Freddy's.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The reviews are in for the Five Nights at Freddy's movie. The Blumhouse production, which was directed and co-written by Emma Tammi, is based on the series of horror video games of the same name created by Scott Cawthon.

The first official reviews have been released ahead of the impending Five Nights at Freddy's release date. At the time of writing, Rotten Tomatoes has not had enough time to aggregate the reviews and assign a Fresh or Rotten score. However, the critics seem to be trending lukewarm to negative, like Variety's Murtada Elfadl, who calls the movie "a rather empty and unexciting effort at attracting horror fans during Halloween season.

What Critics Are Saying About Five Nights at Freddy's The all-important animatronics at the center of the Five Nights at Freddy's movie have been the focus of most reviews' criticisms. Total Film's Neil Smith says they're "about as scary as Barney the purple dinosaur," while NME's James Mottram complains that "these antagonists – if that’s even what they are – are so lifeless.

The Five Nights at Freddy's cast - particularly Josh Hutcherson - fares better than the animatronics, with The Telegraph's Tim Robey calling the lead actor the "saving grace" for his "compellingly worn-out lead performance." The Daily Beast's Coleman Splide also praises "Hutcherson’s charm," but insists that it isn't "capable of buoying a movie that set sail with massive holes in its hull.

Some praise can still be found, including Deadline's Pete Hammond insisting "the execution is first-rate" and SlashFilm's Jeremy Mathai saying, "there are plenty of cleverly staged thrills, humor, and most importantly, heart, to keep the proceedings humming along." It remains to be seen if these reviews significantly impact the Five Nights at Freddy's box office, which is currently projected for a strong $50 million opening.
