MOUNT PEARL, N.L. — “Here, try it on,” Bonnie Edgecombe says, smiling, holding open a Harris Tweed coat in shades of green with faux fur around the hood and cuffs.
An acquaintance came to her with a very specific request: he knew someone online who was looking to buy a replica of the coat worn by Keanu Reeves in “The Matrix” movies and wanted Edgecombe to give it a go.She and daughter Julia Cook bought some patterns that they cut and taped together, using a full skirt for the bottom and a suit jacket for the top, which they modified until they had recreated the iconic coat.
Orders were being shipped around the world, Edgecombe was winning entrepreneurial awards, and her customer list was growing fast and fanatically. Abbyshot secured a licencing agreement with the BBC in the U.K. and the U.S. and Edgecombe started a private online forum where fans gave product suggestions and advice.
One of their favourite moments happened at a convention in London, when a little boy approached the booth to ask if his mother could buy him a “Doctor Who” bowtie.
