The last time Cindy Thomas saw her daughter Christina “Tina” Mae, the younger woman had just married her husband Gabe Watson. The newlyweds, who lived near Birmingham in the US state of Alabama, then left for their honeymoon in Australia. But just 11 days into their marriage, 26-year-old Tina was killed while diving at The Great Barrier Reef in October 2003. Following a police investigation and a thorough coronial inquest, Watson was charged over Tina’s death and spent time in jail in Australia.
Initially, her parents believed their daughter’s death was what her husband had made it out to be — a tragic accident. “It was just total chaos here because we were getting just his story and ... we were believing it,” Cindy said. But, as more information trickled through, Gabe’s version of events started to unravel and his bizarre behaviour began to raise their suspicions. At one point, Gabe used bolt cutters to remove flowers from his new wife’s grave following her funeral in November.
