In the film we also see Oppenheimer’s dramatic fall from grace, when his stance on nuclear bombs and his previous links with the Communist Party USA led to him being stripped of his security clearance, effectively ending his career as a nuclear physicist.Oppenheimer, a lifelong chain smoker, was diagnosed with throat cancer in late 1965. He had surgery and unsuccessful radiation treatment and chemotherapy late in 1966 and died in 1967 aged 62.
