A strange phenomenon in the waterways has residents on the NSW Central Coast scratching their heads. But now the local council has shed some light on the pink substance spotted in the waters at beaches including Gwandalan, Patonga, and Sandy Beach at Summerland Point. The substance is a marine species, an organism called noctiluca scintillans that has bloomed in the water, according to Central Coast Council. And it’s quite the sight to see — especially at night.
“During the day, the bloom can appear as a pink murkiness but at night its bioluminescence makes it appear as an electric blue colour, like a blue fire on the water! “This is a naturally occurring algae and is generally not considered dangerous though it can cause skin and eye irritation in some people.” The species was responsible for “rare blooms” in the 1980s but started appearing more often in Sydney coastal waters in 1993, according to the University of Tasmania.
