Artwork in the estate of a Melbourne business blue-blood who shrugged off a fraud scandal in the 1990s will go under the hammer in Melbourne on October 29.

Sir Andrew Grimwade CBE was an Oxford-educated chemical engineer, a committed philanthropist and arts benefactor, a cattle breeder, and one-time director of companies such as IBM and the National Australia Bank. He was a former chairman of Australian Consolidated Industries, which was founded by his illustrious family, and was part of the first official trade delegation to China in 1973.

The Rockhole Site of Palipalintja, 2003, by Bobby West Tjupurrula is estimated at $8000 to $10,000 in Gibson’s Australian and International Art auction in Melbourne on October 29, 2023. The large work in acrylic on canvas is being offered from the collection of Lady Marsha and the late Sir Andrew Grimwade CBE.

Dingo Pup, 2007, by Craig Koomeeta, is in acrylic and earth pigments on milkwood. Measuring 29 x 49 x 10.5 cm, Dingo Pup is estimated at $1200 to $1800. Ullin tipped that two Daniel Walbidi works in the Grimwade sale might do well. Walbidi comes from a small coastal community 250 km south of Broome called Bidyadanga. His work has been exhibited all around the world, and is represented in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Australia.In all, there are 268 lots in the Gibson’s auction. The totals of the lower and upper estimates of the sale are $1,097,750 and $1,637,050. It is one of Gibson’s biggest art sales of the year.

Earth’s Creation II, 1995, by Emily Kame Kngwarreye, will be the star of Cooee Art’s auction of Indigenous and Oceanic works from the Rod Menzies estate. Maggie Watson Napangardi’s Digging Stick Dreaming, 1995/96, in acrylic paint on Belgian linen, is estimated at $90,000 to $150,000 in the Cooee Art auction of artworks from the Rodney Menzies collection. The imposing work measures 201 by 351 cm.
