It remains unclear how many people have voiced support for the Saskatchewan government’s proposed Parents’ Bill of Rights, and Minister of Education Jeremy Cockrill still won’t offer specifics.
The minister again claimed he has heard from thousands of parents but added a consistent thread was that “nobody wanted to be less involved in their child’s education.” The poll found support for policies requiring teachers to inform parents if a child changes the name or pronouns they want to be identified within schools had support from around 45 per cent of Saskatchewan residents while 55 say it should be up to the teacher’s discretion.
“When the conversation goes to outing trans kids, making vulnerable kids less safe, and using the notwithstanding clause to override or override children’s Charter rights … I think more people are unsupportive of that than they are supportive,” Nicole Sarauer, NDP MLA and justice critic, said of the poll
