The recent 'brownface' parodying of Oscar-nominated actress Yalitza Aparicio by Televisa's Yeka Rosales sparked a backlash. But making fun of indigenous people spans generations in Mexican TV and film. More from DoranyPineda90:

“This [stereotyping] is as old as film,” says Rubén Hernández-León, a UCLA sociology professor and director of the university’s Center for Mexican Studies. “If we think about film and TV as the media of the 20th century, it’s all throughout the 20th century in Mexico.”

La India María went on to star in nearly two-dozen roles in Mexican TV and film, including “Revista musical Nescafe” , “¡Ay María qué puntería!” , “Pobre, pero honrada” and “La hija de Moctezuma” . Hernández-León noted the 1957 Mexican film “Tizoc: Amor Indio,” or “Indian Love,” that starred María Félix and Pedro Infante as the poor yet humble indigenous man Tizoc. Infante, hailed as one of the greats of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema between the 1930s and ’60s, was fair-skinned and donned “brownface” for his character.

For Leda Ramos, a faculty lecturer at Cal State L.A.’s Department of Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies, Aparicio’s role as Cleo, though muted, has sparked a necessary conversation.

True A lot are racist but they don’t see themselves like that. Crazy, right! Italians are very judgmental too🤨

Making fun of? really?

mexicans are FAR MORE racists than they either accept or think they are.

?

books have been written about the race problem in Mexico. Bottom line is culture and ignorance.

Like everywhere else....

Agreed.

Interesting that all the actors/actresses see themselves as ‘white’ and call Aparicio a ‘fucking india (indigenous), ‘ugly’, a passing ‘fad’, ‘undeserving’, & ‘not truly an ‘actress’. Las 5 críticas más sonadas en contra de Yalitza Aparicio. via YouTube

I am amazed with so many Mexican fellows in México who just didn’t stop making fun of Yalitza... it is just horrible!

Say what? I thought only white people were racist.

It's. A. Goddamn. Parody. Do you even know what that word means?

This is what Conservatives r saying. The Mexican government is racist & wont build schools & infrastructure for 'brown ppl' in Mexico. So Americans are subsidizing Mexico's racism, when they should be getting UN censures, etc. Mexico gets away with it b/c ppl can just come here

Sweet. Let’s tell everyone how to behave. This might get us more hated than bombs
