“Despite increases observed in several culture commodities, many have yet to regain their pre-pandemic status,” the report said. “Such was the case for trade of culture heritage and natural heritage, as well as performing arts and festivals and celebrations, which were heavily impacted by successive waves of restriction during the pandemic.”
Culture and sport imports follow the same trend, having declined 10.2 per cent during the height of the pandemic and climbing 6.6 per cent in the year that followed. When just looking at sports, Canadian exports climbed 9.3 per cent in 2021 with growth shown in all categories. Statistics Canada attributes the growth to the return of international students to the country in 2021.
Canadian trade in culture saw “unprecedented declines” in 2020, as exports rebounded by 7.8 per cent in 2021, with crafts, broadcasting, and film and video accounting for nearly 75 per cent of the exports.
